Our Guide to Keeping Your Tulips Tall and Fresh

by Robert Canning on March 04, 2022

Tulips are not just the prettiest flowers in spring, they're also the easiest to grow. With their springtime spikes, the plant's name comes from the Dutch word for a turban – a reference to the flower's tightly rolled shape.

Tulips are also relatively easy to maintain, so it's not a surprise that they're popular among homeowners as the beautiful and vibrant flower arrangement can transform any living space.  Despite their no-fuss nature though, tulips have the tendency to droop every now and then. In that regard, how do you ensure your tulips at home stays up and perky?

Caring for Your Tulips and Keeping Them Upright

Tip #1: Trim Your Tulips at an Angle

This is the first thing tulip lovers should do, especially if the flower is starting to dip and droop. Tulip cuttings are actually stemmed and the tips of the flower buds that were trimmed when the flower was picked.

However, the stems can still grow and become something beautiful as it blooms, so it's best to cut them at a 45-degree angle after every 12 hours or once a day. This trick can stave off the drooping effect.

Tip #2: Put Them in Fresh Water ASAP

After cutting your tulips, put them in a vase or bowl and place them in a cool, dark place. Change the water daily or once a week. In other words, water them as often as possible. Tulips need water, the more frequently the better. They will stay fresh and perky if you will change their water every 12 hours.

Tip #3: Keep Tulips Away from Direct Sunlight and Heat

Tulips are very sensitive to light, so it's best to keep them in a cool, dark place. In fact, it's best to keep it away from direct sunlight. If you're planning to use it as a centrepiece, place a vase or any other container on top of it to shade it from sunlight.

Tip #4: Retrim Your Tulips 1cm Every Time You Change Their Water

Trim your tulips 1cm every time you change their water. It might sound excessive but it actually works. You will have to trim your tulip's stem again and again, but it will grow back to its full height eventually.

Tip #5: Cut Off the Flowering Stems

Tulips are available in various colours, sizes and forms. Some of them are even edible. Aside from that, it's best to cut off the flowering stems of your tulip if the flower starts to droop. This will allow the flower to stand up straight and the new flower buds will also stay straight and strong.

Tip #6: Avoid Relying on a Vase to Maintain the Upright Position of Your Tulip

This is a common mistake most homeowners tend to do. While it does help in maintaining the flowers' upright position, tulips still need to be trimmed.

The Bottom Line: Keeping Your Tulips Upright for a Long Time

As mentioned earlier, tulips are relatively easy to maintain, but it doesn't mean you can get away with not doing anything to keep their upright position like other flower types.

If you want your tulips to perch up straight, you need to trim it, especially if it's leaning to the side. Aside from that, you should avoid relying on vases and bowls to maintain the upright position of your tulips.

Every flower is special, but tulips deserve a special place in your garden – not only for their beauty but also for their simple maintenance and care.
